Student Benefits
With the help of their tutors, students of Volunteer English Program can:
• Attend a parent-teacher conference and speak about their child
• Read the instructions on their prescription label
• Follow directions from their supervisor
With the one-to-one tutoring method of instruction, students learn what is most important to them and to their families. Critical health literacy skills are often among the first tutor-student lessons. With the help of their tutors, VEP students become literate and obtain the knowledge and skills necessary for a better life in this country. They can achieve their individual language learning goals such as:
• Getting a sustaining job
• Making a phone call to a doctor
• Understanding directions from a healthcare professional
• Becoming a citizen
• Participating in their new society.
Below is a testimonial from one of our recent students:
"Me and my family want to tell you that we are very grateful for the support that you and your institution have given me. I have improve the language, I have learned about the American culture, and that makes me really happy. I promise you and your institution that when I learn English well, I want to be one of your tutors or like my tutor ... He has not only been my tutor, but he has been a friend, a guide, an angel that has been near me all this time supporting me, making my mind and spirit stronger so that I could follow my path the right way. Mrs. Carol, I want to thank you again because you approved me to be in your program and because you gave me a great tutor...
God bless you."
